Huntahan: Banahaw Mysticism, Urban Legends, and Folktales

Abstract

This paper explored the undocumented urban legends and folktales of the towns along the foothills of the mystical Mount Banahaw through collecting and classifying. After which a compilation is created. This study employed qualitative research which made use of document analysis; and ethnographic fieldwork where researchers observed and interacted with the study’s participants in their real-life environment. This research used an interview protocol and observation guide. The researchers identified the narrators in the different towns in Quezon with the help of the key informants. They were the old locals or residents, historians, and other people of the town who had knowledge to narrate or tell stories. The researchers assumed that there are undocumented legends and folktales in the province of Quezon and that our oral traditions are at the risk of extinction and that the best way to preserve and promote would be to archive them and include them in the school curriculum on a broader scale.
